Many students have not been wearing their IDs during the school day, despite the administration’s clear communication about the policy being in place for safety. This problem has brought many questions about why students are not wearing them.
Reasons students aren’t wearing their IDs could be because it’s an annoying “accessory” to their outfit or that they forget to put it on, and don’t get reminded of it. Others may even view it as a pointless minor policy; for instance, Student A says they don’t wear it because “[they] don‘t see the point of it” while another student says “no one cares” referring to the teachers.
There are also a fair amount of teachers who don’t seem to be enforcing the policy. This could be because they forget to or believe the policy is unimportant. We also have a fair amount of teachers enforcing the policy to help keep our school safe. These teachers understand the importance of wearing your ID and do their best to ensure every student has it on.
The ID policy is in place to keep everyone here at school safe. Especially with everything happening in the world that has to do with school shootings and other issues around the safety of students. It is a way for the admin and teachers to be able to identify everyone as someone who is supposed to be on campus.
We have to face the facts: in 2024 there have already been over 100 incidents of gunfire on school grounds and the numbers are still climbing. As school safety is a huge issue in America right now, administration and security is doing everything that they can to keep students and staff comfortable at school. Wearing your ID on campus is just one way to help keep the school secure. It is necessary to wear your ID so that the administration can identify you, know you are supposed to be here, and make sure you are not a threat.
So, although you may find the ID policy “dumb” or “useless”, the reality is that it’s needed to keep our school a safe learning environment for students, teachers, and all staff.
