While the Golden Globes are supposed to award films and television series and they did, the talk of the night has focused on celebrity relationships. Given that this is the first major award show of award season and it is coming off of the holidays, it ends up being the time that many relationships go public – maybe even this year more than most.
Celebrity relationship coverage started out strong on the red carpet as Selena Gomez showed off an old Hollywood-style light blue Prada dress, as she walked the carpet with her fiancé Benny Blanco showing off her new engagement ring. But it did not end there, Zendaya shocked the internet by revealing her engagement ring alongside a gorgeous Louis Vuitton burnt orange gown. While it was not confirmed at the time she walked the carpet, TMZ has since confirmed that Zendaya and Tom Holland are in fact engaged.
Other noteworthy fashion moments from the red carpet include when Emma Stone pulled out a new pixie haircut to accompany her red strapless Louis Vuitton gown and Ariana Grande wearing a color other than pink as she wore champagne colored vintage Givenchy dress, in which she pulled out what she described as “A little Glinda toss toss” of her ponytail for the Glam Bot.
While they did not walk the carpet together, Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalamet assured fans that they were still dating after premiering the relationship a year ago at the Globes Globes. They were at the same table and seen hanging out as a couple.
Headed into the Globes, there were high expectations for better hosting than last year as the jokes by host Jo Koy fell flat and offended multiple people including Taylor Swift. This year, the globes were hosted by Nikki Glaser as she made “history as the first woman to solo host the ceremony.” While the Golden Globes have maintained the burn style of humor, Nikki Glaser’s jokes seem to have landed comedically rather than critically on the audience and the internet even if some of the jokes called out harmed Hollywood practices in a positive light and could be viewed as offensive.
Similar to the Grammys, awards are presented by other celebrities. Music icon Elton John alongside Brandi Carlile had the honor of presenting Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross with the award for Best Original Score – Motion Picture for their music in “Challengers.” Other notable presenters include: Anya Taylor-Joy, Melissa McCarthy, and Gal Gadot.
As she accepted the award for Best Actress – Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her role in “The Substance”, Demi Moore shared an encouraging yet emotional message about not giving up even if others try to crush your dreams by sharing a personal story of a producer calling her a “popcorn actor,” and how that almost caused her to not take the role in this film.
As for awards quantities, many fans were disappointed by “Wicked’s” lack of wins as it only took home one globe and that was in the category of Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. This newer category was created last year, and was previously won by “Barbie.” “Emilia Pérez” and “Shōgun” swept the awards, each taking home four globes. While Selena Gomez had multiple nominations from her involvement in “Emilia Pérez” and “Only Murders in the Building,” she left with no globes, which seems to be a theme of her career and the globes as, despite her numbers nominations, she has yet to take one home.
Overall, the globes were a success, as the night was filled with celebrity relationships, heartfelt speeches, and some awards.
