Towards the end of June, the new Formula 1 (F1) movie was released. After only the first 10 days, the movie made a slamming $293 million. It overtook some of Apple’s most profitable movies making it “stand as Apple’s highest-grossing movie to date”, with the movie’s final box office earnings adding up to over $600 million. The movie includes stars like Brad Pitt and British-Nigerian actor Damson Idris who make the movie even more recognizable for those who weren’t interested in F1 before the movie came out. The film being Pitt’s most successful movie launch of his career shows how appealing it is, breaking records for both the main actor and the studio.
Earning 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie released an inside look into what life is like for F1 racers. It was recorded during 185 hours of actual Grand Prix weekends which is when the races take place, creating an authentic look for the races filmed in the movie. Featuring real life F1 drivers like Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, and Charles Leclerc, the movie creates a realistic view of the F1 world, with seven-time world champion Hamilton even helping to produce the film.
With Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a former F1 driver who joins a struggling team, and Idris playing the role of Joshua Pearce, a rookie driver on the team, the storyline could not be more suspenseful and exciting. The fictional team they join, APXGP, is about to lose sponsorship and get torn apart.During their final race, Pearce collides with Lewis Hamilton, causing Pearce to skid off the tracks and leave the race. This clears the path for Hayes to take the lead and win the Grand Prix. The team is saved and Hayes retires, having met his goal of finding his love for racing again.
The suspenseful, action-packed movie earned a total of $615.4 million. This movie was extremely successful, not only for the team who created it, but also for everyone involved in the F1 world. People left the theatre not only having seen a movie filled with humor, but also taking away a heartfelt message. It showed the true happiness that not only comes from achieving your own goals, but also helping other people achieve theirs.
